Gourds Galore

Christmas 2008

I visited my Aunt Ann & her husband Mark, in Ashland, TN. 45 minutes from Nashville. We suprised her by sneaking out her sister Jan (my birthmom) out with me. Ann was truly suprised. During our visit, we spent Christmas day at her step daughter Eliza's house. On Eliza's inlaws property was a wonderful hilltop garden, sleeping for the winter of course.

They grow these amazing Native American gourds. Here they are drying in the sun.

Eliza's inlaws were gracious enough to give me a few & taught me how to harvest the seeds.

Once the seeds rattle freely in the dried gourd, they are ready to harvest.




My first crop of Gourds growing along fence of our dog yard.

We have several gourds growning already.

The climbing tendrels they send out are amazing.

Enjoying the sun.

They have big beautiful leaves. And a very unique smell - I'm not sure how to decribe it - a musty peppery smell.

Will definately update with the growth and drying process of my first planting of gourds. I really like that I took the seeds right from the gourd and am growing my own gourds now.

Creative Workings

So I've been trying new craft things this summer. My summer of craft. I start my residency at Gwinnett Medical in the ICU, Aug 10th. I am really excited - but until then it's study for NCLEX and craft! Here are a few thing I made up this last week.

These little clay mushroom charms I made for my friend Jean to use in her hemp necklaces. I also made plant stakes in the same colors for my terrariums.

I love this Votive Candle Holder. I made some hanging ones too which I will photograph this week. This lime green votive cozy is stiffened so it stands on its own and doesn't sag. I found the glass at a thrift store. Glass stands 4inches tall & 2.5 inches wide. Listed in etsy shop.

Headbands

So I'm not one who loves to do my hair everyday. In fact the only reason it's long, especially in this Atlanta heat is that my husband likes it & it's easier to pull back for work.

So normally I rock the bandanna or a crocheted kerchief thing.

A friend took a bunch of my work up to Bonnaroo this weekend to sell & in digging stuff out for her to take & to post on the YART sale, I realized I use to make headbands and kerchiefs.

Long story short. . . . what do you thing of these? Are they too girly for adults? I put the flowers on pinbacks so they are removable.

I'm doing the Saturday Market again at the Guilded Angel/Candler Park Market, so I'll see how they go over there. I also made just some flower broaches - going to add some vintage buttons.

Would like some feedback . . . price? I was thinking $8

Mushrooms

Yesterday while waiting for the gas man, I made a bunch of little clay mushrooms for my terrariums. They turned out super cute.

Tawashi's Galore

Tawashi's - cotton scrubbies which allow you to throw out your nasty kitchen sponge. Here I've made lots of larger ones for the kitchen (3.5 inches) and small ones for face washing (2.5 inches). Will be listing on etsy on friday.

Machine wash & dry. I think I'm going to do $5 for big ones, $3 for little ones. And some sort of deal for multiples. Thoughts?

Kraftworks Prep

I've been gearing up for Kraftworks tomorrow night at Youndblood. I'm going to bring a few terrariums I've been working on & see how they do.


This is one I'm especially proud of.

















For this one I made the little mushroom out of clay - my first experience working with clay. I crocheted a hanger out of cotton. And glued a vintage button to the lid after I spray painted it.

I used aquarium rocks, potting soil, charcoal and moss from my garden for the plant life.

Terrarium

My first terrarium.

Moss & plant from my garden, recyled artichoke heart jar, antelope came in a grab bag from a thrift store (the bag had the cutest little army men - not that plastic army men are cute - but I got it to make magnets with).


Love the way it turned out. Really simple and easy to create.

















Made a crocheted accessory for the top. Not sure if I like it. Beads were from the swag bags for the I.C.E. show tomorrow. I got my bag because I volunteered to stuff!

Purple & Green Scrappy Afghan

Lately I've been a bit bored of crochet projects that take me no time at all. So I decided to make my first granny square scrappy afghan. Using coordinating yarn from my stash (I have A LOT of yarn) with some supplemental purchased skeins thrown in. I wanted it to fit our king size bed so it turned out to be 11 X 11, 4 inch squares.

I think it turned out nice for my first attempt at traditional crocheting.
